Thar Desert Sundowner

Venture into the vast expanse of the Great Thar Desert and experience the spirit of this storied frontier. Covering nearly 10% of India’s landmass, the Thar has long been a historic gateway into Rajasthan and beyond. Set out on a guided rural wilderness drive or choose a traditional camel safari for an authentic desert experience. Your guide will interpret the landscape for you as you explore acres of interesting spots on your way to a dune.

Organic Farm & Gardens

Stroll to our Organic Farm and Vegetable Garden, which breeds one of India’s rarest indigenous cattle species, and poultry. Arrive early to watch the cows being milked, the eggs collected and join our gardeners to hand-pick your own ingredients, fresh from the garden. Chef will create a delicious traditional Indian breakfast which is quite literally, a farm to fork experience, tucked away in a quiet corner of the estate.

The Music of the Manganiyars

The Manganiyars are the traditional bards of the western desert, with a history that goes back 13 centuries. They first played for our family in the 1960’s and generations since have been playing for us at camp. With beautiful handcrafted instruments these troubadours mesmerise you with their melodies, singing about love, war, passion and devotion under the star lit skies.

Kalbelia is a traditional dance form originating from the Kalbeliya community of Rajasthan, India. Known for its vibrant movements and expressive gestures that mimic snake-like motions, the dance reflects the community’s deep connection to the serpent goddess. Dancers wear colourful, flowing skirts and adorn themselves with traditional jewellery, creating a visually captivating spectacle.

Traditional Gher Dance

Traditional Ger dance is a popular folk dance performed in Jaisalmer. The dance is characterized by rhythmic movements and accompanied by traditional instruments like the dholak, nagada, and dhol drums.

Great Thar Sundowner

The Great Thar Sundowner is an unforgettable experience set amidst the golden sand dunes. Set off from camp by 4 x 4 jeep through traditional villages and desert wilderness. Switch over to a camel and traverse the golden dunes at sunset followed by sundowners on the dunes.

The Manganiyar Musicians

The Manganiyar musicians are a community of traditional folk performers from the Thar Desert region. Despite their Islamic faith, their songs often praise Hindu deities and celebrate local folklore, reflecting the deep cultural interweaving of Hindu and Muslim traditions in Rajasthan. Their music is characterized by spellbinding songs, passed down through generations, and performed with instruments such as the kamaicha (a bowed string instrument made of wood and goat skin), the dholak, and the khartal.

How to reach us

Although set in a remote location, SUJÁN The Serai is easily accessible by road, rail as well as by air. Our closest cities are Jaisalmer (approximately 40 kilometres) and Jodhpur (approximately 260 kilometres) which is extremely well connected to Delhi and Mumbai as well as the rest of Rajasthan.

•By road from Jaisalmer there is a driving time of approximately 40 minutes.

•By road from Jodhpur, there is a driving time of approximately 4 hours.

•By road from SUJÁN JAWAI, there is a driving time of approximately 4.5 hours.

•By Air to Jaisalmer. During the high season there are daily flights operating from Mumbai, Delhi & Jaipur.

•Private charters into Jaisalmer Airport are possible to arrange if we have advance notice.

VACCINATIONS

Guests are advised to check the latest government requirements and information regarding Covid 19 and vaccinations before travel. None of SUJÁN’s properties are situated in high malaria-risk areas. However, it is essential that guests consult their medical practitioners regarding anti-malaria requirements prior to travel.

What to pack

To make your experience more enjoyable, we have put together a small packing list that might help you plan your visit:

•A pair of long trousers

•A long-sleeve cotton shirt, cotton t-shirts

•Comfortable trousers for sightseeing

•Comfortable walking shoes/track shoes/hiking boots for walks

•Wide-brimmed Hat/ Panama/ Safari Hat

•Swimming costume/ bathing suit

•Windbreaker/light jacket

•Light linen or cotton sundress

•A light fleece or long-sleeve shirt

•Shawl•Sandals•Pair of closed toe shoes•Sunglasses, lip balm, mosquito repellent (mosquito repellent is provided for all our guests, but you are welcome to bring along your favourite brand)

•Camera, memory cards, chargers & adaptersPlease note that the legs, shoulders and upper arms need to be covered at all times when visiting places of worship and our local communities.

The early mornings and evenings can be colder during the winter months (November-February) so we recommend packing accordingly: A warm jacket or winter coat, jumpers, a beanie or winter hat, scarf, gloves, long-sleeve shirt, thermals, warm socks.

Weather

Temperatures range from a minimum of 5 degrees Celsius in winter to a maximum of 49 degrees Celsius in summer. Minimum temperature reaches upto 2 degrees Celsius in winter

SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER

Warm throughout the day. Average temperature range is between 25 degrees Celsius to a maximum day temperature of 35 degrees Celsius with medium humidity. Maximum temperature reaches up to 40 degrees Celsius in Sept/October.

NOVEMBER TO FEBRUARY – Cold temperatures in the mornings and evenings with warm sun in the daytime. Average temperature range is between 5 degrees Celsius to a maximum day temperature of 25 degrees Celsius.

MARCH – Warm temperatures in the evening with high temperatures in the day time. Average temperature range is between 17 degrees Celsius to a maximum day time temperature of 40 degrees Celsius in a very dry climate.
